As adults, we’ve all asked children this question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” We expect answers like “doctor,” “astronaut,” or something equally ambitious that leaves us in awe. It’s a conversation starter, a way to see a child’s dreams and imagination shine.
Recently, in a career development class, I had a moment that shifted my perspective. We watched a video of a teenager responding to this classic question. His answer wasn’t about a high-paying job or an extraordinary achievement. It was simple: “I just want to be happy and healthy.”
That response stayed with me. Isn’t that what we all want? To wake up each day feeling joy, fulfillment, and wellness in whatever we do? Yet, as adults, we often chase careers that don’t bring us closer to those goals.
This realization made me think: why don’t we focus more on choosing careers that truly make us happy? Jobs that align with our passions, values, and the life we want to live—not just the paycheck or societal expectations.
Asking kids what they want to be when they grow up is a fun and meaningful question. But maybe we should also start asking ourselves: Am I happy and healthy in what I do? If the answer isn’t a resounding yes, it’s never too late to make a change.
Because in the end, the greatest success isn’t a title or a trophy—it’s a life that brings you happiness and health. Isn’t that what growing up is all about?
